"Epiphanies and Symptoms" : Jennifer de Gandt and Philip Harland
Each year in November, Innovative Pathways offers a workshop on an aspect of David Grove's work that has been developed. This year Jennifer will offer her work on "Epiphanies", the title of a Salon planned with David, and Philip Harland will offer his work on "Symptoms", also coming from his latest work with David. In this way we hope both to connect you to David and to take you forward in our own thinking and experience.
Part 1. "Epiphanies: our sudden insights into the above and beyond and below." Nov 11 -12
Part 2 . "Symptoms: no journey of the mind is impossible, it is only a matter of navigation." Nov 12-13
PART 1. "EPIPHANIES"
An epiphany (from Ancient Greek) is the sudden realization or comprehension of the larger essence or meaning of something. The term is used in a philosophical or literary context to denote that we have found "the last piece of the puzzle that allows us to see the whole picture".
The word Epiphany also denotes the festival of the 6th of January in the Christian calendar, when the wise men came to honour the birth of Christ thus confirming his Divinity. Now used by writers, the best known being James Joyce, who wished to collect his descriptions of these strange and powerful insights . The well-known reference is in "Ulysses", when Stephen Dedalus is thinking to himself:
"Remember your epiphanies on green oval leaves, deeply deep, copies to be sent if you died to all the great libraries of the world, including Alexandria? Someone was to read them there after a few thousand years..."
The word, as you can see has deep suggestive power. What can we let emerge and will we touch Emergent Knowledge? Let's look at Jennifer's presuppositions for the workshop.
1. First we are interested in emergence: what emerges under what conditions? In what contexts?
Is there a perennial spirituality that emerges through personal insights?
What connection with the spiritual literature?
When does the freshness of here and now emergence become the restricting dogma of tomorrow's religions?
What conditions bring us close to the source of our inspiration? Can we trust it?
2. Second we are interested in our own Epiphanies. What are they? Where are they?
What patterns can we see in our own sudden insights and perceptions?
When do we tend to have moments of heightened experience?
Can we express these insights in words, poems, or stories? Under what conditions?
3. Thirdly we will look for literary examples that have moved us and share those. What is the same? What different? In our experiences and theirs.
My sources in researching this topic have been Haiku Poetry, Indian Non-Duality, Colin Wilson's book "Super-consciousness", the experiences of my clients while working with Clean Processes, conversations with David, and most recently Muriel Barbery's bestseller "The elegance of the hedgehog" published by Gallic (original French title "L'elegance du herison" Editions Gallimard), which reminded me abruptly of the role of epiphanies in our present modern secular society.
4. Fourthly, we will look at experiences we have had using Clean and Emergent processes both as explorer and facilitator.
What do we do when a client has a heightened experience of insight?
What map do we have for spiritual experiences?
PART 2: "SYMPTOMS"
Experience the complete range of 'Clean' in a process designed for the relief or resolution of a physical or psychological symptom.
'The Six-Space Symptom' represents David Grove's final legacy. On what turned out to be his last visit to La Bouvetiere (he died suddenly a few months later in the U.S.), he told Philip and Jennifer that he thought this new process was "such an amazing discovery, so amazingly, blindingly obvious, yet we missed it all these years." David and Philip tried the process out on each other in New Zealand in 2007 while they were working with Emergent Knowledge and considering the relationship between David's early discoveries in Clean Language and his latest in 'The Power of Six' - work that David developed further at La Bouvetiere and Philip in London.
The process that has emerged integrates elements of Clean Language, Therapeutic Metaphor, Clean Space, Emergent Knowledge and the Power of Six in a seamless procedure aimed at relieving or resolving pretty much any kind of mindbody problem - or epiphany-related question - and has particularly relevance to symptoms with a physical element - a puzzling or recurring ache, pain or strain. The client is facilitated to develop a metaphor for the problem using standard Clean Language questioning, and then invited to move to a series of six psychoactive spaces in which they are asked a simple new Clean question.
Like all Grove's later work, the Six-Space Symptom is a formulaic process that is readily reproducible, teachable and adaptable. If you already have a grounding in 'Clean' you will be able to make it your own and adapt it to any kind of facilitation - therapy, counselling, coaching and so on. If your knowledge of 'Clean' is minimal or non-existent, you are sure to pick up the process - and the basic Clean Language and Therapeutic Metaphor elements that are part of it - quickly.
There are six Grovian presuppositions behind the process:
1. Every symptom has coded within it all the information the client needs to resolve it.
2. The information more often than not comes coded in symbol and metaphor.
3. Clean Language questions are linguistic tools for helping the client decode this information.
4. Movement is a somatic tool for discovering more information than is possible in a fixed position.
5. Different spaces hold different information. They allow 'boundary conditions' for the information and allow the client to keep track of it.
6. Iterating the information six times in six spaces promotes 'emergence'. New knowledge appears. This is 'tacit' knowledge that we had all along but didn't know how to access. The optimum number of iterations needed for it to appear is six.
For more details of the seminar check below. For more on 'sixness' and emergent knowledge read The Power of Six: A Six Part Guide to Self Knowledge (Wayfinder Press 2009), the book that David Grove asked Philip to write and on which they collaborated. A real-life case history of 'The Six-Space Symptom' is featured in the final chapter, which looks at emerging applications of the Power of Six. You can get an advance copy of the book via this website or at www.amazon.com, www.barnesandnoble.com or www.pickabook.co.uk (and from bookshops and www.amazon.co.uk sometime in November) and there will be a few copies available at La Bouvetiere on a first-come, first-served basis. Philip will be happy to sign copies and answer any questions you might have on the content. We hope to have a French translation available in 2010.
